BUD Cargo City – check in
BUD Cargo City was handed over last November and officially began operations in January this year, when the first cargo aircraft, a Boeing 747, arrived.
Coninvest’s experts were very enthusiastic about this large-scale project, as this facility opened the possibility for Budapest Airport and Hungary to become one of the most important logistics hubs in the Central and Eastern European region.
Our cooperation with Budapest Airport is not new, we have already participated in several employee catering projects in the planning phase. For us, every new request is also a new challenge, as there are never two identical cases and, of course, there is a situation to be resolved that could not be prepared for in advance. We enjoyed the fact that we did not have to adapt to old walls and coverings, as the design of the new rooms, the design, furnishings and colors of the kitchen and guest room were all left to us from design to implementation.
The facility is a large-scale, greenfield investment for the airport, where an area was designated in one of the Forwarder buildings for shipping companies and they were asked to dream of a fresh-style employee canteen that harmonizes with Budapest Airport’s image. It is extremely important for airport staff to have such a kitchen, as the location of the building makes it hard to imagine anyone just jumping down to the corner shop for a Parisian bun. Even in the small shop closest to the airport, you would have to sit in a car, which would have to pay constant attention to its time-consuming, inconvenient and everyday work. So the canteen has also become a community space where you can not only eat, but also talk, have tea and have coffee during the day.
A homely environment in an industrial kitchen and canteen area as well
The design – as always – started with the background and the division of functions there. It soon became apparent that there was little space, so a heating-finishing kitchen was set up, as well as a guest space, which became the most spectacular part of the whole. We felt it was important that in an industrial environment like this, those working there would feel at home at least at the time of the meals and we thought we had brought the best out of this tight space. The natural wood surfaces nicely counterbalance the industrial effect, bring naturalness to the atmosphere, and the complementary yellow color makes the overall picture modern and cheerful with its liveliness.
Thank you to our staff, the experts at Coninvest
We would definitely like to highlight the names of some of our staff involved in the project, as the result of their coordinated collaboration is that from scratch this kitchen has been able to be realized at such a rapid pace. Here we would like to thank Pál Aczél, who designed the kitchen and the publishing desk, and István Dybisewkszky, who created the visual design of the 44-seat dining room.
And who constantly supervised the works of the canteen – as he told her, as a blonde woman among hundreds of male workers – is none other than Nóra Dávid, who designed 14 kitchenette installations for office workers with a uniquely clean design.
We have known so far that life is adventurously beautiful, which we also abounded in during the construction. Mentioning just one, for example, in several upstairs kitchens, the worktops had to be lifted by the boys through the window, all amidst huge gusts of wind, which also made it much more difficult to transport the kitchen appliances. However, at the cost of good teamwork successfully done with the carpenters and the construction company, everything was done by the set deadline.
We believe that with the construction of BUD Cargo City and our experience gained during the work, others and we will benefit a lot in the future.
